Origins
Sam Cox, better known as Mr Doodle, was born in 1994 in Tenterden, Kent, United Kingdom. From an early age he obsessively filled sketchbooks and the walls of his family home with small characters and patterns, later describing this habit as “obsessive graffiti”.
After studying art (including illustration at university, often mentioned in interviews), he gradually developed a coherent large?scale doodle practice, moving from sketchbooks to walls, furniture and everyday objects.
Current situation
From around 2015, Mr Doodle gained visibility through viral videos showing him covering entire surfaces with his doodles in real time, especially on Instagram and TikTok. He then collaborated with fashion and lifestyle brands, created large?scale murals and staged solo exhibitions, particularly in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, mainland China and across Europe.
In 2020, his work “Spring” achieved around US$1 million at Phillips Hong Kong, signalling his arrival on the upper tier of the international art market and attracting the attention of major galleries and auction houses.
Place of residence
Sam Cox lives and works mainly in Tenterden, Kent, where he and his partner have transformed their home into the “Doodle House”, covering walls, floors, furniture and objects with his signature black?and?white patterns. Widely shared in the media and on his social channels, this immersive project illustrates his ambition to turn doodling into a total environment.
Graphic style and media
Mr Doodle’s style is defined by a continuous black line, usually drawn with marker on a white ground, forming a dense network of characters, objects and graphic signs. Close to automatic drawing, this visual language echoes comics, children’s illustration and aspects of pop art and street art.
He primarily works with markers, acrylic paint and ink on walls, canvas and objects (furniture, cars, clothing), and also uses digital media for animations and commercial collaborations. His universe is deliberately playful and accessible, often becoming immersive when he covers whole rooms.
List of exhibitions
Mr Doodle’s career includes numerous solo exhibitions and immersive projects, especially across Asia (Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong, Shanghai) and Europe (London and other capitals). Exact titles and dates vary by institution and gallery; for a precise and up?to?date exhibition list, it is advisable to consult his official website biography and announcements from the galleries and auction houses that work with him.
